This is a false parallel. Sacrificing his own life for Dean is something Sam has done more than once. What Dean did was sacrifice Sam’s autonomy, Sam’s body and free will. By letting Gadreel in, he let an angel wipe Sam’s memories, make him once again doubt his own humanity, and then went on to use Sam’s body to kill their friend and many others.
So yeah, if the situation was reversed and all the circumstances were the exact same, Sam would not go against Dean’s express wishes that he was ready to die a natural death, would not violate his body by allowing another supernatural being to possess it, and people would not be dead as a result of using him as a meat puppet. Sam, you’re such a selfish bastard.
#something else important to remember #is that while yes #this IS a false parallel #sam has been through a lot of character change since season 2 #including grieving for his brother’s presumed permanent death several times #and hell #and having his autonomy taken by lucifer #his mind fucked with by castiel #his morals fucked with by ruby #and his choices and ethics in season 2 are hardly comparable to season 9 because the worst that person had to deal with was the death of jess and john #those things are horrible #those things are not the crucible of the seasons to come #that person believed he could always save dean no matter what #because he’d never been in a position to experience situations where dean might have chosen to stay gone #or for that matter #situations where sam might have #you can call bullshit on me if you want #but i think this is a character changing due to history #not inconsistent writing
