Seshat (also spelled Safkhet, Sesat, Seshet, Sesheta, and Seshata) is the Goddess of writing, wisdom and knowledge. Wife to the Egyptian God of Knowledge, Thoth. She is credited as the creator of written language while her husband taught writing to the people. She is also seen as the goddess of architecture, astronomy, astrology, building, mathematics, and surveying.

Known as the ‘Mistress of the House of Books,’ she cares for Thoth’s library or the library of the Gods and is the patron of all earthly libraries and librarians. Also known as the ‘Mistress of the House of Architects’, she was associated in ancient times with the ‘stretching cord ritual’ in which the dimensions of buildings were measured out.

Her sacred animals are leopards and she is often depicted as a woman wearing a leopard print dress as well as a headdress of a seven pointed star and either a crescent moon, inverted horns or a bow.
