Of all , ALL, the John Watson scenes we have, to me this is the scene that conveys the absolute truth. He is grieving his lost love, he voices his admiration for Sherlock being Sherlock, he needs to use a crutch [whiskey] to cope with the emotions the tape evokes and he opens his heart and says his fervent prayer; stop being dead. Every nuance of this scene tells us all we need to know about John Watson’s heart, it belongs to Sherlock. Really, Mary never stood a chance.
