If you’re smart like John you’ll figure out why this gif is interesting. If you’re smart like Sherlock you’ll figure out why this gif is interesting from a cinematographic point of view.

You all try to figure it out and when you’ve made your guesses I’ll tell you what Steve told me.

The game, Mrs. Hudson, is on!

Yes, the wipe of John running in front of the camera is how they move the camera from the steadicam to the crane. It’s genius b/c they had to pose Benedict, stop the camera, move the camera to the crane, pose Benedict in exactly the same place then roll again. But wait! There’s more! HOW CAN YOU TELL FOR 100% CERTAIN IT’S TWO DIFFERENT SHOTS?

You can tell from the cars in the background that it’s two different shots, but I’m still baffled by the people walking. Especially the man on the left. They’re almost exactly on point. This little clip is so cinematically delicious.

Not only do the cars change, but the taillight on the silver car goes off and the light above the doorway across the street comes on. It’s later in the day and the sun started to go down. You’ll notice a shift in the quality of the light, too, if you look carefully on not-my-gif. See they choreographed the scene nearly perfectly! The “mistakes” (the light and cars) should have been fixed in post production, but that costs time and money and sometimes in the end the powers that be choose not to do the fixes. Did you notice this the first 1,000 times you saw it?
