So I got to go to my school’s Rare and Special Collections Library today to look at the first editions of the Samuel Johnson dictionary (1755) and the Noah Webster dictionary (1828). Let me tell you, they were not above being rude (see: Johnson throwing shade at Scottish people) and expressing their opinions towards what they were defining (see: Webster’s great dislike of cats).
Overall, I had so much fun looking through these old, old, books and I suggest any of you who have access to these libraries to go and check the books out!
