It doesn’t take a backbone to be a genius — or a master of the comedic arts, apparently.
An octopus has been captured on film exhibiting one of the most
remarkable (and amusing) examples of tool usage in the animal kingdom.
Footage shows the eight-limbed animal literally walking along the ocean
floor carrying two halves of a broken coconut shell beneath his arms, seemingly without rhyme or reason.
But this tentacled one knows exactly what he’s doing.
As it turns out, some octopuses, like this, one possess the foresight to actually pack along coconut shells to use as protective shelters when exploring areas without adequate places to hide.
Scientists say this behavior is the first evidence of tool use by an
octopus, putting the aquatic animals in a league with a small number of
other animals known to do the same.
1) The gifs are sped up, and the video posted at the link shows the octopus walking hilariously slow. He’s just going for a stroll, enjoying life and humming Edith Piaf. With his coconut.
2) The decision to curl up in his cocount is made on camera. Like, he sees the scuba diver, pauses, thinks for a bit, then decides “yeah, I’m not dealing with this today” and just closes himself up in his nope coconut and checks the fuck out.
3) MOST IMPORTANTLY, you can drown from laughing while scuba diving??? THAT IS THE GREATEST THING I’VE EVER HEARD. I need video of that. Send a team of scientists down to the bottom of the ocean and have one tell knock knock jokes to the other one until he spits out his mouthpiece from laughing. Do it for science.
