You eyes can be so cruel
Just as I can be so cruel
The fandom loves this quote, so let’s talk about eyes. Or better yet, how Jareth and Sarah look at each other.
First scene Sara is scared, almost crying, she isn’t exactly necessarily scared of Jareth, but of what she did, what he might do and the consequences. Jareth has the upper hand here, he even mocks her, he knows that she has no chance.
Second scene Sarah is still in disadvantage, she tries to look like as if she has everything under control. It’s a piece of cake, but it isn’t, she is lying and Jareth knows it, Sarah wasn’t expecting for Jareth to appear right now. It’s clear on his eyes that he knows very well who has the control on that scene.
It’s on the third scene that Sarah’s eyes change. She isn’t scared here, now she is interested, even fascinated. She looks for him during the first part of the ball scene. Jareth still has things under control, but now he doesn’t want to scare her away, he wants to bring her close. She is better than he thought, he needs to change his strategy.
The biggest difference is on the fourth scene. I put all the gifs of each one of them on the same column, but you can see they are in a different position and looking at a different direction than the ones they were put during almost the whole movie. It could be coincidence (even because later on the same scene, they change position) but it may also show that something changed. Now Jareth is on disadvantage, Sarah arrived at the center, she is about to win. And she isn’t scared anymore, look at her eyes, now they are cruel, determined, ready to win. It’s also the first scene he looks at her as an equal, because the frightened girl from the first scene is now stronger.
For my will is as strong as yours, and my kingdom is as great
