What if Ben Solo never wanted to be a Jedi? From the time he was tiny, all he wanted to do was fly like his father. While his mother and uncle talked to him about duty and responsibility and legacy all he knew was that he was descended from some of the greatest pilots in the galaxy, so why couldn’t he follow in their footsteps instead?

“You’re destined for more than that,” his mother would tell him, but he didn’t care about destiny, he only cared about the brief sense of weightlessness when a ship first leaves atmo, watching the blue fade into black. He envies the freedom his father has, and even when it hurts every time he leaves, Ben never blames him. He’d go too, if he could.

When a new voice comes to him at night, it also tells him he’s destined for greater things, and at first he ignores it. 

His mother sends him off with his uncle (his father now only a rare visitor) to train to be a Jedi and Ben feels like his feet are encased in permacrete and he will never really soar.
