technology related sensory memories from my childhood

  • sliding the metal cover on floppy disks
  • the slight resistance of inserting cassette and video tapes
  • ripping off the strips of holed paper off of dot matrix printer paper
  • rolling the wheel on a disposable camera to take another photo
  • The “warp speed” sound of a VCR rewinding a VHS tape.
  • The sound of all the static electricity discharging off the screen when you turned off your CRT monitor or TV after it’s been on for a long time.
  • Modem handshake.
  • The “tick-tick-tick CLICK” sound of a rotary phone’s dial returning to home after you input a number.

All them and

The brrrm brrrm brrrm sound of a BBC Mastermicro Computer reading a 5.25" disc.

And the similar sound of an Amiga doing the same albeit on 3.5inch discs.

and that wierd high pitched sound that some old VDUs used to make, like its components were all awry.

Oh man, I grew up on Amigas. I got unreasonably happy when I saw a lemming in Kingdom Rush because THAT brings back all the memories….
