We’re on Gallifrey. Death is Time Lord for man flu!
This is the first of three (or four?) times in this episode that Moffat basically jumps up and down saying YES THE DOCTOR CAN BE A WOMAN, and the only one that also says YES THE DOCTOR DOESN’T HAVE TO BE WHITE.
The second is Me, the last immortal with the Doctor at the end of time (”Who’s out there?” “Me.”) That’s right, WHO is out there.
The third (kind of) is Missy, mentioned as a possible part of the hybrid; she was the first on-screen Time Lord/Lady to change sexes when regenerating.
And finally, there’s Clara. “Clara WHO,” the Doctor asks in the diner, and yes she is: with her own quirky TARDIS and Ashildr as her companion, in her last breath between two heartbeats, Deathless, she flies off into the universe.
And then, oh ho, in the trailer for the Christmas special we get River, the Doctor’s first and great parallel in the Moffat era. It’s been said before (and I’d add a link here if only I could remember where) that Moffat took RDJ’s “Lonely God” and began to construct a new pantheon around him. The general, looking at her new form, says “Back to normal, am I?” In Moffat’s universe, it is indeed normal for his gods to be female.
