John wants to be mad at him but he can’t help but laugh instead

That last GIF right there is why I have so much fun doing character study on John. He’s serious. He’s solid and strong and doesn’t take shit.

On the other hand, he chases criminals illegally (vigilante justice is still illegal) and owns an illegal gun and hides his flatmate’s cigs and pulls a rank he hasn’t had in almost two years on an unsuspecting insubordinate.

He shoots dogs in front of a policeman and lets his best friend know when he’s done fucked up (“Not good?” “Timing!”). He stops arguing about whether he’s Sherlock’s date because it doesn’t matter and cares, genuinely cares about what other people think of his best friend, because that does matter.

John Watson is implacable and solid and wonderful and unpredictable, and you will never convince me that he is just a sidekick.
