Here’s the thing I will never get: I gather most of the guys heading up the abuse of women in gaming are straight. Why don’t they WANT more women in gaming? Like, if you’re straight, and you’re a super hardcore gamer, wouldn’t women taking an interest in video games be the most awesome thing ever? WTF?
Remember that John Green thing about how being a nerd is about being able to unabashedly, unironically LIKE stuff and be EXCITED about stuff? I think that was one of the best things he’s said, and it’s one of my favourite things about geek culture – the idea of just being super into stuff, wholeheartedly and excitedly, whatever it is.
Part of being excited about your stuff should be being excited to find other people who are also excited about the same stuff, so you can share your excitement.
Have you ever seen one of those videos of people having a Star Wars wedding or something like that and thought, “Wow, that’s cool, they totally committed to their thing.” That doesn’t happen if one of them gets all, ‘Oh, so you like Star Wars, eh? I bet you don’t even have a B’Omarr Monk action figure still in the original shipping box.’ ” And it certainly doesn’t happen if one of them is all, “HA HA HA HA HA I HOPE YOU GET RAPED!!!” No, it happens when they’re both like, “OMG YOU LIKE STAR WARS I LIKE STAR WARS TOO LETS MARATHON THEM ALL THIS WEEKEND AND WE CAN GET INTO A HUGE DEBATE OVER WHETHER OR NOT R5-D4 REALLY HAD A BAD MOTIVATOR OR WHETHER IT WAS SABOTAGE!!!” And then they get to live the life.
