Do you have any links to standard formatting for script writing? Is there formatting software you have to buy? I’ve been interested in screenwriting for a long time but have never seen classes offered at my college and looking online is so confusing.

scriptscribbles:

My understanding is that final draft is generally considered the industry standard in terms of programs. I haven’t actually used it myself because I don’t have a few hundred bucks to spend on software, but it’s the normal one.

Personally, I use the free version of Celtx, since I do not have much money and quite frankly need to get myself a job.

As for formatting, there’s a ton of books and stuff on that. I think the book I was using earlier this year was called The Screenwriter’s Bible, but I haven’t gotten around to looking through the entire thing yet so I can’t attest to how amazing a guide it is. I don’t really know what your best guide to that would be.

If I could throw my two cents in? We’ve used “the screenwriters bible” in my screenwriting classes and it does have the most comprehensive formatting I’ve seen. Celtx is good and yeah, final draft is expensive ( i was lucky and got it on discount). I think maybe scrivener has a screenwriting mode too, but I haven’t used that.

Probably the most important thing to remember when writing screenplay is that you don’t necessarily want to ‘direct’. You can describe, but give the actors/directors room.

We’re a quarter of the way through the year wait for more Doctor Who. Probably through the most barren and news-less patch of the year by now. There’s still Class and the Christmas special and many new audios, comics, and books to come. I can endure this. Probably.

Actually, no, I’m already freaking out over lack of content/new things to talk about. There’s no way I’d have made it through the wilderness years.

I went through the wilderness years and very distinctly remember being parked on the sofa with my parents when the Doctor Who movie aired in 1996.

Twas a long time sustained by classic who reruns. Except it wasn’t classic who then, it was just Dr Who.

With all Torchwood gets into situations they’d be needed and with all the things Torchwood stamps their logo on… would there be Torchwood logo condoms?

I would guarantee that at some point someone got Torchwood condoms made as a practical joke.

Jack swiped the box. Or maybe Owen.

How much of the Torchwood-labeled stuff was left over from London Torchwood? Like, it wouldn’t surprise me if Jack liberated equipment from there in the aftermath of Canary Wharf.

scriptscribbles:

That certainly seems possible. Ianto might have pitched in, too. After all, he kept a Torchwood brand Cyberman in the basement, right?

It’s canon that Jack went to London with Owen after One fell, I’m pretty sure. I bet he took more then just Torchwood pens (but he probaby took those too). I think Ianto didn’t show up until after they got back.

I’ve signed up for a sitcom writing class next quarter. You know, despite hardly ever watching sitcoms. Guess I’d better binge watch some for “research”.

Why in the name of all that is holey and good would you subject yourself to this?

I’m aspiring to writing for television. Might as well get a grasp on different formats and genres.

Also, I’m pretty sure there’s no holes involved, but you never know.

I’m taking intermediate screenwriting now and Documentary screenwriting in a couple weeks. Good luck to both of us
