You know how the gender binary is so strong that people assign pets to masculine and feminine traits?  So dogs are seen as masculine, and cats are seen (and sexualized) as feminine.  Despite the fact that they’re, oh, for starters, two distinct species.

I just had a conversation that was even more surreal, and that I can only hope is not mainstream:

Apparently, according to this man, fossil fuels are masculine!  And renewables like solar and wind are, therefore, feminine! 

This was said in response to me talking about wanting to put solar panels on my (hypothetical) future home, and him interrupting, saying that he didn’t want a “girly house” and that I should just go get a gas-powered generator in the next aisle over (we were in Home Depot). 

A short conversation ensued, with me being rather, and increasingly, incredulous as it went on, as this fellow tried to impose his (literally toxic) view of masculinity on me, and eventually just started swearing at me (using gendered slurs) for failing to conform.  That part I wasn’t surprised by; it’s not the first time I’ve had such arguments with men whose masculinity is as fragile as spun glass and the only way they have of buttressing it is by imposing it on others. 

No, the part that has me going “buh?” is seeing the extension the gender binary view to infrastructure. 

This explains so much though. So much about the conservative resistance to renewable energy and the refusal to acknowledge the toxic environmental effects of nonrenewable resources.

And tangentially, I’ve noticed a significant overlap between people who hate cats and massive, revolting sexists.

This is horrifying and gross, because the list includes:

  • Cranberry sauce and pie filling. (Poor people can forget about making dessert for Thanksgiving dinner.)
  • Creamed vegetables
  • Baked beans
  • Pickles
  • Pork and beans
  • Frozen veggies that come in packages featuring pasta, nuts, rice, cheese, or meats
  • French fries and hash browns
  • Sharp cheddar cheese, Swiss, and fresh mozzarella, shredded and sliced cheeses (except American cheese of course), cheese food, spreads, and products. Even Kosher cheese is banned unless you apply to get a specific check for it which basically could identify who the poor Jewish people are. (This is really gross and skeevy because of how this is isolating Jewish people and outing them.)
  • Canned peas and green beans
  • Albacore tuna, red salmon, and fish fillets
  • Bagels, pita bread, English muffins
  • White rice and wild rice
  • Taco shells
  • Almond, rice, goat, and soy milk.
  • Brown eggs and any eggs produced by cage-free or free range chickens, which basically helps corporate chicken farms
  • Several kinds of infant food
  • Anything in bulk
  • Anything organic or natural

here’s the list, for anyone who’s skeptical like i am. it’s on a real-ass government-ass website. i am, tbh, disgusted.

The list is actually worse- no peanuts, SEASONINGS, SOUPS, any canned beans, WHITE RICE, anything organic or natural, and anything like lactose free/kosher milk, or anything that might be necessary to a religious group or someone with conditions such as celiac or lactose intolerance basically have to fill out forms which singles them out based on health/religious reasons. 

This is really, really gross. 

Is it just me or did they basically rule out basically all the cheapest and easiest to prepare food? Because that is bullshit.

you can’t buy salmon, potatoes, fucking /bagels/, how the sweet fuck is anybody going to put together a fucking meal with this shit? i mean yes stereotypical food, blah blah, but seriously people. what the hell? i have had to put together three shivas in the past four months. do you know how many motherfucking vegetable trays and bagels and lox i have bought? so much. what would i have done if i was on food stamps? WELL IT LOOKS LIKE NOBODY AT THE HOUSE COULD HAVE EATEN. APPARENTLY YOU CAN’T BUY ANYTHING KOSHER EVER, unless you get a fucking WAIVER FOR IT, like you have to fucking REGISTER TO BE JEWISH, YOU FUCKING TERRIFYING MOTHERFUCKERS, I SEE YOU. I SEE. YOU.

also the restrictions on baby food are bullshit and you are STARVING POOR CHILDREN WITH THESE RESTRICTIONS fuck you SO HARD. 

These people are literally elected officials and they think they’re doing the right thing. Fuck this backwards country.

my mom used to be on food stamps and literally this would be impossible to live on, like i wouldn’t fucking be here if the rules had been like this. it’s absurd that this is a thing, i cannot fucking believe people voted these people in and i can’t believe even further that this bill go passed. it’s fucking ridiculous.
